The Virgin Suicides (2000), Cert 15.

Director - Sofia Coppola

Writer - Sofia Coppola.

Starring - Kirsten Dunst, James Woods, Kathleen Turner & Josh Hartnett.

Premise - The story of three sisters in 70's suburban America and there attempts to lead a normal childhood under the iron law of their oppressive mother.

The Virgin Suicides is quite one of the most depressing and haunting films that I have ever seen. The subject matter of the suicide of five sisters in 70's suburbia is dark, but the film is beautifully shot by Francis Ford Coppola's daughter Sofia in her debut. It almost makes up for her performance in The Godfather Part 3. ;-)

It's not hard to see why all the boys in this film are infatuated by the sisters, they are shot with a glow around them that makes them appear almost unworldly. The feel of the film is greatly enhanced by the haunting soundtrack by French music pioneers Air.

Performance wise everyone is on top form. James Woods and Kathleen Turner as the girls parents are stunning. Woods shows great emotion as he really seems to want to give the girls more freedom, but it's clear his wife has other ideas. Turner is excellent as the devote catholic mother and for my money should have been nominated for best supporting actress at the Oscars. The girls themselves are fantastic, especially Kirsten Dunst as the delectable Lux. They ooze an aloofness that just makes them more desirable. Elsewhere look out for a Danny Devito cameo and Josh Hartnet as the suave Tripp.

The chilling ending left me dazed. There was no warning, you knew what was going to happen (the title gives it away), but it hits you hard and leaves you stunned.

Very depressing, an emotional rollercoaster, but worth the effort.

7/10 for The Virgin Suicides.
