Premise - One year after the events of the first Scary Movie the survivors are invited to take part in a scientific study into insomnia. The only catch is that the study is to take place over the weekend in a supposedly haunted house. Scary Movie transcends badness, it's a painful experience. Watching the film is akin to watching a bad hoPme movie, only the home movie might provide more laughs. The tagline for the first film was 'No Mercy, No Shame, No Sequel', if only the Wayans brothers had kept their promise then the movie going public would have been spared this torturous experience. Scary Movie was a spoof of 'Scream', (which itself was a parody of 80's teen slasher movie. Spoofing a parody? What is that, post-post-modernism?) whilst this sequel is more a spoof of haunted house flicks like 'House On Haunted Hill' and 'The Haunting'. Although it isn't afraid to take swipes at the likes of 'The Exorcist', 'Charlie's Angels' and bizarrely 'Dude, Where's My Car'. Scary Movie 2 is not funny, actually I should say, I didn't find it funny. Comedy is incredibly subjective so it's entirely possible that some people out there might find it amusing. To give you a frame of reference, I like low brow comedy. 'Tommy Boy', 'American Pie', 'Airplane', 'The Naked Gun', these are among my favourite comedies. However, Scary Movie 2 takes low brow to another level, gross out humour is high brow compared to what the Wayans brothers serve up as humour here. The jokes go on for too long, obviously the word 'cut' is not in the Wayans brothers vocabulary. Scenes go on and on, when they should have ended minutes earlier. Somebody also needs to tell the Wayans brothers that films generally need a plot. Working out a bunch of sketches spoofing a bunch of other movies and then building a film around them is not a good way to make a movie. Unfortunately the Wayans thought other wise. The film stumbles form one weak parody scene to another without any narrative between them to explain what's going on. The cast look genuinely embarrassed to be in this film. Apart from Marlon and Shawn Wayans that is, they just have dollar signs where their eyes should be. And for the love of God what is James Woods doing in this? Marlon Brando is the luckiest man alive for catching pneumonia a few days prior to shooting. Woods on the other hand must have needed a new house. Congratulations Scary Movie 2, you are now the worst film from the year 2001 that I have seen. It's just an awful film, no redeeming features whatsoever. That's not strictly true, the film is mercifully short. Avoid at all costs. You know what's really scary? There's a third part out next year.................
