Jurassic Park III. (2001) Cert 12. Director - Joe Johnston. Writer - Joe Johnston. Starring - Sam Neil, William H Macy, Tea Leoni & Laura Dern. |
Premise - After a paragliding accident see’s a couples son lost on Isla
Sorna, they recruit Dr Alan Grant to try and track him down on the
Dinosaur infested island. For a kick off I should probably say that I was never the original
films biggest fan, The first time I saw it I was (like everyone else I
presume) blown away by the visuals. However when I went to see it again a
week later I was forced to look past the visuals and realised that there
wasn't much else. What you get for your money is fast pace, good effects, likeable
characters and cracking set pieces. Oh, and for the first time in as long
as I can remember a kid that I found in no way annoying!
The Lost World was just a mess, which for my
money represents Spielberg's worst movie to date.
So for reference
-
Jurassic Park - 3/5
The Lost World - 2/5
And so it
was with some trepidation that I entered the cinema to see the franchises
third outing.
I can report that I was pleasantly surprised. Joe
Johnston has created a cracking popcorn flick that is nice and short
(around 90mins) with some excellent action set pieces that had me on the
edge of my seat. Dino versus Dino, Dino versus man, flying Dino versus
man. Great stuff.
A good cast, Sam Neil, Tea Leoni, William H Macy
and a cameo from Laura Dern; all are good and interact well with their
dinosaur screen mates. The script is functional although you can tell it
was heavily re-written throughout shooting, but the film goes at such a
pace you don't have time to think about cheesy dialogue.
I have
seen a fair few of this years summer 'blockbusters' and I would have to
say that JP3 is the one I have enjoyed the most.
I liked 3
better than the first one, maybe it was because we knew the deal and
didn't need the 'oh aren't the dinosaurs cool' or 'Here's how we made the
dinosaur' scenes, it just cuts to the chase!
Got 90mins to kill?
Check it out.
