18. Director - John Cameron Mitchell Writer - John Cameron Mitchell. Starring - John Cameron Mitchell, Michael Pitt,
Miriam Shor & Stephen
Trask.
Premise -
A German transvestite singer tours the US trailing her ex that has stolen
all her material. I should
kick off by saying that outside of 'The Wizard Of Oz' I loathe musicals. I
just don't get why characters have to burst into song to convey how
they're feeling. Why not just say it and spare us the tedious song.
Anyway, my
point is that the reason I don't like Hedwig is not because it's a
musical. In-fact I liked the music in the movie, hell it's one of the few
things I did like. No, I
didn't like Hedwig because of what is laughably referred to as the story
and the cardboard cut-out characters. The story just didn't cut it for me.
It was ludicrous and I was constantly clock-watching whilst the crazy
events were unfolding before me. The film
was reminding me of The Rocky Horror Picture Show throughout. That is
certainly not a good thing. The film feels like a stage production, most
likely because it was adapted from one. Another
thing which I disliked ws the animation that was peppered throughout the
film. It was an irritant and I almost switched off during one of the
longer bits. Hedwig has
two saving graces, the music and the costume design. I want the last hour
and a half of my life back
please.
