Freddy Got Fingered (2001). Cert 18. Director - Tom Green. Writer - Tom Green. Starring - Tom Green, Rip Torn, Julie Hagerty, Eddie
Kaye Thomas & Marisa
Coulghan.
Premise -
Gord (Tom Green) is a cartoonist that goes to Hollywood to fulfil his
ambition of becoming a successful animator. When he fails to make an
impression he moves back home to stay with his parents in their
basement. I should
probably start out by saying that i am something of a Tom Green fan. I
thought the show he did on MTV was one of the funniest shows from the past
couple of years. I also liked his performances in Road Trip and Charlie's
Angels. There's just something about his offbeat humour I find intensely
amusing. I went
into Freddy Got Fingered with some trepidation. Terms like, 'sick' and
'worst movie ever made' were being bandied about in connection with the
movie. However whilst Freddy Got Fingered is certainly sick, it is by not
means the worst movie ever made. Hell, it's not even among the worst films
ever made. That's not
to say it's not a bad film, it is, but to say its one off the worst ever
made is just reactionary, knee-jerk nonsense. There are many, many far
worse crimes against celluloid than this movie. Down to
the actual film then. One of
Freddy Got Fingered main problem is the script, or lack there-off. There
is no real narrative, it seems to be a series of scenes tied together with
a lose plot about Green wanting to be an animator. The scenes range from
such ludicrous set-ups as Green delivering a baby and swinging it around
his head by the umbilical cord to Green masturbating an Elephant.
Whilst I
generally find Greens work amusing he even pushed my sense of morality
with some of the stuff in this film. Fetishistic cripples I can just about
handle, but using child molestation for laughs is where I draw the
line. The
performances are fine, but you have to wonder what drew people like Rip
Torn and Julie Hagerty to this movie. It couldn't have been he script,
must've been the pay cheque. Tom Green doesn't act, he is just himself.
So you've
got a non-existent script, a clutch of average performances and
questionable morality. What does the film have going for it? Well, for one
a mercifully short running time. Even though near the end someone can be
seen holding up a sign saying, "When will this movie f***ing end?". Also
it would seem that Green has at least some talent as he seems comfortable
behind the camera. Some scenes are very well handled. It should
also be noted that although a lot of the material is questionable, I did
find myself laughing a fair bit throughout. Not the
disaster I was expecting, but certainly no masterpiece.
