Premise - A Mafia boss' son, previously uninvolved in the business, takes over when his father is critically wounded in a mob hit.

The Godfather is one of those films that you simply cannot live your live without seeing. It should be made compulsory viewing in schools. This film (and its sequel) are perfect examples of virtuoso film-making.

The prominent theme that runs through all of the Godfather movies is that of family. The most important thing in life is your family and doing right by them. If you disrespect your family you will pay.

Even although the film has a three hour running time Coppola sweeps you up in the intricate lives of the Corleone family so that the time flies by. Before you know it, your hitting the eject button and slamming part 2 into the DVD player.

Godfather also boasts stunning work from one of the best ensemble casts in the history of filmaking. All are nothing short of believable in their parts.

Best though are Pacino and Brando. Brando's mumbling Don is a triumph, perfectly moving between loving family man and ruthless Godfather without missing a beat. Pacino is simply stunning. Michael Corleone's development from idealistic WW2 veteran who want's nothing to do with the family business, to powerful Don is amazing. The final shot of the doors closing sums up all he has become and all he has left behind.

Despite being 30 years old The Godfather in no way looks dated. The period setting is recreated perfectly and I think if this film was made today, little would be changed.

The film has been so mercilessly lampooned and ripped off that watching it today is like meeting an old friend. Scenes like the horses head, the tollbooth and 'your my brother and I love you', are etched into modern cinema history and deservedly so.

If you haven't seen The Godfather you are truly missing out on one of modern cinemas greats. Put yourself out of your misery.

10/10 for The Godfather.
