Premise - Frank (Bill Murray) is a slobish single parent. When he eats an egg that has not only been inside a monkey's mouth, but also rolling around the floor, he employ's the ten second rule (You have ten seconds to eat anything that falls on the ground) and eats it.

Zoom inside Franks body and we are introduced to the city of Frank. A busy metropolis where white & red blood cells go about their daily work. But, the egg introduces evil virus Thrax (Laurence Fishburne) to Frank and maverick white blood cell cop (Chris Rock) is teamed up with cold capsule Drix (David Hyde Pierce) to combat the new infection.

If my summarisation of the plot is longer than normal it's because Osmosis Jones is not an easy movie to sum up in one sentence. It is for all intense and purposes two movies. A live action gross out comedy directed by The Farrley Brothers (Dumb & Dumber, There's Something About Mary) and an animated buddy cop action comedy directed by Piet Kroon and Tom Sito (such diverse work as Shrek, The Iron Giant, Roger Rabbit & He-Man!)

Both parts work well independently and the live action stuff is the best work the Farrley's have done since 'Mary'. Sure, it's the usual gross out fare, but Bill Murray takes it to another level, his improvs are inspired and he shows again why he can easily lay claim to the tag, 'funniest man alive'. He also play's nicely off equally slobbish work mate Uncle Bob (Chris Elliott) and young daughter Shane (Elena Franklin). SNL alumni Molly Shannon gives a hilarious performance as Shanes teacher who has a knack of being on the end of Frank's 'nastinesss'!

Whilst the live action stuff is good, it pales when compared to the gorgeous animated sections. Every frame is a joy to look at (especially on the DVD format), evident car and attention has been poured into these sections and it pays off. The screen is littered with small in-jokes and signs that a second (and maybe third) viewing is essential to catch them all. Look out for arrivals on the airport (stomach) arrival board that include pizza, beer, toenails, bogger and more beer. It's this kind of anatomical self-referential humour that makes the animated sections a pleasure to watch.

It's not all clever sight gags however. The teaming of Chris Rock and David Hyde Pierce (Fraiser) is inspired. The nature of animated features allows for Rock and Pierce to go nuts with the ad-libs. They clearly had a great time making this flick (as can be seen in the behind the scenes material) and the witty back and forth between the two leads is excellent. It's always good to see (or hear) William Shatner in a movie and he is great as the Mayor of the City of Frank who (in a nice tip of the hat to Jaws) tries to cover up the impending Virus threat to secure his next tenure as Mayor. Brandy is serviceable as the Mayors secretary, but she is given little more to do than scream.

Show stealer of the animated sections however is Laurence Fishburne as the virus Thrax. The animators really pushed the boat out with the creation of this character. They seem to have taken parts of Morpheus and mixed him with some elements from Japanese Anime to create the coolest animated bad guy I think I've ever seen. Fishburnes voice just oozes from the character and is perfect.

This film really came as a surprise to me. I like to see all of Bill Murray's work and I didn't expect much from what I assumed would just be a 'kids' film, but Osmosis Jones is a smart, witty comedy that deserves to be seen by a much larger audience. If only for the important lessons on food hygiene!

7/10 for Osmosis Jones.

Poster Quote - One cell of a good film.
